2023 Pre-Feasibility Funding Challenge

Nextfor has launched this challenge fund to support the commercial development, investment, advancement and deployment of next-generation forest-based solutions in Ontario.

This program strongly aligns with Natural Resources Canada’s Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Forest Biomass Program.

Examples of eligible projects under this stream include:

  • engineering and feasibility studies
  • pre-commercial and commercial scientific trials
  • operational and technical requirement assessments, for projects that use forest biomass as a primary feedstock

Eligible projects will address one or more of the following Nextfor focus areas: Biomaterials (Lignin, Biocomposites), Biocarbon for Heavy Industry (decarbonization and/or biofuels).

The funding is a private/public joint innovation fund operated under the governance structure of the Centre for Research and Innovation in the Bioeconomy (CRIBE). This Challenge is fully aligned to CRIBE’s mission mandate.

Eligible project challenge funding from CRIBE will be a reimbursement of 50% of total project costs, up to $150,000.
