Biochar is consistently touted as a potential high-volume, low- to mid-value product
that could be used to diversify Canada’s forest product industry. Biochar is receiving increased interest as a bioproduct from lower-value biomass streams, including wood harvest and processing residues, agricultural residues and manures, and waste organics from post-industrial or post-consumer streams.

This primer and market assessment identifies and assesses the potential market of biochar and related biochar products in the context of emerging Canadian production capacity, linking biochar production platforms to biorefinery operations. The assessment lays out the ways in which biochar can be added onto existing forest operations or the roles that biochar production might play in future biorefineries.
