2021 Solid Wood Bioheat Webinar Series

This webinar series is hosted by Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. All webinar recordings are hosted on nextfor.ca

Heating with wood isn’t a new concept, but in Ontario, heating with wood using modern and highly efficient bioheat equipment is relatively new. The use of new systems which use solid woody biofuels to produce bioheat has become common practice in other areas of the world, and in parts of Canada. There is great opportunity for its use in Ontario, particularly since forestry in the province operates under a world-class sustainable forest management framework.

In Ontario, heating with wood using modern bioheat equipment is a viable heating option, but lack of awareness is identified as a barrier to its uptake. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is committed to addressing this barrier and promoting the use of bioheat from forest biomass. The Government of Ontario and Natural Resources Canada supported FPInnovations in the development of A Solid Wood Bioheat Guide for Rural and Remote Communities in Ontario, released in February 2020. This guide provides individuals and community leaders with the information and confidence to start a bioheat project at the residential, commercial and institutional building scales.

To further promote the use of bioheat in Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is hosting a Solid Wood Bioheat Webinar Series, in partnership with FPInnovations, Natural Resources Canada, and the Centre for Research and Innovation in the Bio-Economy.

This webinar series will introduce participants to bioheat from solid woody biofuels over six one-hour sessions. Bioheat experts, community groups, and business leaders will discuss the benefits and considerations of using solid woody biofuels for heating at residential, commercial and community scales in Ontario.

Do you heat buildings over the winter? Are you looking to invest in low-carbon energy options? Or, are you interested in starting a bioheat project in your community? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this webinar series is for you!
